サンフランシスコに引越して来てすぐの頃、語学学校に通っていました。
語学学校には様々な国から人が集まっているので、図らずも日本代表的な立ち位置になることがあります。「これって日本ではどうなの？」その答えが、日本の答えになったりします。責任重大！（あんま思ってないけど）。
一方でこういう経験は、日本のことを改めて知るきっかけになるなぁと思いました。
「日本の選挙の投票率ってどのぐらいなの？」「日本は犯罪をおかして刑務所から出てきた人にはどんな措置をとっているの？」などなど。正直わからない…インターネットって本当に便利だなぁと思いました。
語学学校で「mythical creature」について説明する宿題があり、カッパについて発表しようと思ったものの、あまり知らないカッパのこと。調べてみたら発見があったのでブログにポストします。
Today I will write about the mythical Japanese creature, “Kappa”. Kappa lives around rivers. He has a green body, and looks like a child. He has a dish of water on top of his head. If the dish goes dry, he would lose his power. His hands are similar to a frog’s, he has webs. He is good at swimming.
He likes sumo wresling, so he sometimes asks children to do sumo. Kappa is usually stronger than most children, but before sumo, if they bow, Kappa loses his water, so the child can win.
It is said that Kappa is a dead child whose parents couldn’t help him because of poverty.
Kappa has funny looks, so sometimes he is written about as an animation character.
カッパは相撲好きだったんですね。そしてカッパを負かしたければ、相撲の前にお辞儀するといいらしい。なんかゆるくていい感じです。
カッパについて詳しくなってどうするんだ？という気もしますが、離れてると日本について詳しくなるってのが面白いなぁと思いました。
